The city of Ferndale announced today that Kulick Community Center, 1201 Livernois St, will act as a public warming center. With record cold and a continuing National Weather Services cold weather advisory, anyone with shelter and heating concerns should try to go someplace warm. In the last week, two area women with dementia died after wandering outside, and there have been reports of pets freezing in sub zero temperatures. Kulick will have extended hours Friday and Saturday, staying open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A notice posted to the city’s website says that the center is free and open to all. They recommend bringing items along to make things more comfortable. “We recommend that you bring food and water bottle (there is a bottle-fill drinking fountain available), books and other quiet activities, and any other comforts from home,” the announcement reads.
The Kulick Center doesn’t provide beds, meals or medical supplies, and is not open overnight. Through Jan. 7, Renaissance Vineyard Church will serve as an overnight warming shelter. The church is located at 1841 Pinecrest Dr., Ferndale. Overnight shelter hours are from 7 p.m. til 7 a.m. The shelters ask people not to arrive before 7 p.m., and say that anyone arriving after 9 p.m.. must “show proof of late-hours employment.” For more information, call the city at (248) 546-2525.
