‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival: Ferndale, Detroit Spots Become Luke’s Diner Pop-Ups

Netflix is bringing back the sitcom, and four Metro Detroit coffeeshops will offer free coffee Wednesday morning to celebrate the revival.

FERNDALE, MI — Heads up, “Gilmore Girls” fans: Chazzano Coffee Roasters in Ferndale will temporarily turn into a Luke’s Diner from 7 a.m.-noon Wednesday to brew up interest in the Netflix revival of the popular sitcom that ran from 2000-2007. The coffee shop at 1737 E. Nine Mile Road is among 200 across the country that will become a pop-up Luke’s Diner and offer free coffee for a limited time.

If you weren’t a fan of “Gilmore Girls,” Luke’s Diner was one of the series’ most recognizable sets. Mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore often retreated there to talk about their lives, loves and pop culture — in lightning-fast dialogue — all while sipping coffee by the window of the corner diner in the small Connecticut town of Stars Hollow.

The show has become a cult classic as it grows new fans for those early episodes on Netflix. Next month, the streaming service will release four new extended episodes.

Besides the Ferndale coffee shops, three others in Metro Detroit will be transformed into the iconic shop on Wednesday and offer free coffee for a few hours. Others are in Detroit: Avalon International Breads, 422 W. Willis St.; Always Brewing Detroit, 19180 Grand River Ave.; and Urban Bean Co., 200 Grand River Ave. Coffee shops in Lansing and Williamston are also participating.

The coffee shops will offer the free coffee from 7 a.m.-noon while supplies last, as well as other surprises.
Netflix's "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" will be available for streaming on Nov. 25.

The "Gilmore Girls" revival will consist of four 90-minute episodes that take place in the present, about nine years after the original series ended. Each episode will cover a different season of the year.
