Pontiac Silverdome Implosion Set For Sunday
Detroit Lions former home heads for demolition

This Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, at the Pontiac Silverdome, the crowd’s last roar will come in the form of a massive implosion. At 8:30 am, the storied arena’s final tailgaters - and, yes, there will be dedicated space in the parking lot for tailgating - will watch as the 42-year-old sports stadium takes its final concussive bow.
Built in 1975, the Pontiac Silverdome was home to the Detroit Lions til the team’s 2002 move to Ford Field. Sold in 2009 to Triple Investment for $583,000, the Silverdome’s fate was sealed in 2013 when a storm damaged the famed inflatable dome, exposing the interior to the elements. Ruin became inevitable, but the building then served as a fascinating backdrop for film. In 2015 Detroit native and BMX star Tyler Fernengel shot a now-famous video inside the structure as part of a series for energy drink Red Bull.
"It's going to be a very visible explosion," Crystal Williams, one of the demolition’s publicity coordinators told the Detroit Free Press. "There will be a blast, there will be smoke, so you will be able to catch all of that.”
