Couple With 13 Sons Welcomes Another Baby, And It’s A …

ROCKFORD, MI — The Schwandts, already the parents of 13 sons, welcomed their 14th child into the world Wednesday. The hand-me-down clothing won’t be a problem. The yet-to-be-named baby, who arrived Wednesday, continues the Rockford, Michigan, couple’s streak of all boys.

Thinking the birth was imminent, Kateri Schwandt went to a Grand Rapids hospital Wednesday morning, but doctors sent her home around 2:30 p.m.. She and husband, Jay, had no sooner reached their home when the labor pains started in earnest.

The baby arrived five days before Kateri’s due date, entering the world at 5:56 p.m. He weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long. The gender was a surprise, as it has been with each of the couple’s other kids.

The odds were low the baby would be another boy. A genetics counselor calculated the chance of 12 consecutive sons at around .02 percent, according to MLive.com.

Their 14th son will be their last baby, Jay told WOOD-TV.

Baby boy No. 13 arrived in May 2015. Kateri, one of 14 children, had been pulling for a boy because that’s in her comfort zone, but Jay had visions of Daddy’s little girl.
