Hartland Receives Grant to Ensure Reliability of Water Supply

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) awarded Hartland Township a $13,600 grant for its wellhead protection program. 

The grant will fund Hartland’s efforts to identify a future contingency well site within the Township to ensure reliability of the water supply. Hartland Township was one of 45 communities to receive such a grant from the state agency. 

“We began our wellhead protection efforts two years ago with a similar grant from MDEQ,” explains Hartland Township Director of Public Works Robert West.  “That grant allowed the Township to create a wellhead protection plan. The newly awarded grant provides the funding to implement a key component of that plan – identifying a site for a redundant well that the Township can easily access should one of the current wells become unavailable.”

More than 600 Township residents are connected to the water system, which is supplied by four municipal wells.  The contingency well will be used in the event that one of the current wells fail and is critical to ensuring a reliable source of water for residents connected to the Township system.
