Beaumont offers sharps drop-off in Royal Oak on Oct 12

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak will serve as a collection point for used needles, syringes & lancets as a community service

There is a growing concern about the improper disposal of sharps used by community residents. In response, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is holding a sharps drop-off event on Thursday, October 12, for proper disposal of needles, syringes and lancets used by area residents.

This free community service will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. near the main entrance of the Administration Building, Beaumont Hospital, 3711 West 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak. Staff will be out front to take the containers of medical sharps. For more information, call Catherine Brinker at 248-551-7085.

"Sharps, such as needles and syringes, need to be carefully disposed of to prevent any risk of injury or infection for those who encounter them," says Maureen Elliott, Community Relations manager, Beaumont Health. "This community service event will help ensure that sharps are properly disposed of by trained health care and waste disposal workers."

All needles, syringes and lancets must be placed in durable, puncture-proof containers with lids. Acceptable containers include laundry detergent bottles with caps and coffee cans with lids.

Having secure lids on the containers will help prevent any possible dangerous puncture wounds to workers. Loose needles, syringes and lancets will not be accepted.
