Key Witness In Macomb Corruption Probe Dies

The testimony Steven Hohensee led to the conviction of two engineers. What his deaths means to other cases is unclear.

DETROIT, MI — A key witness in the corruption cases unfolding in Macomb County has died, according to media reports. The witness, former Washington Township public works superintendent Steven Hohensee, apparently died of natural causes on Wednesday.

The testimony of Hohensee, who had been under investigation by the FBI and negotiated a plea deal by cooperating with the authorities, led to the arrest and convictions of James Pistilli, the 68-year-old former chief engineer for Macomb County Public Works Department, and former engineer Paulin Modi, 48.

Modi and Pistilli both pleaded guilty to bribery charges last month and are to be sentenced in January.
