Macomb, Mich., Small Business Owner Discovers the Entrepreneurial Spirit

Chawanne Burns juggles kids, home and business to grow her window-covering franchise 70% since January

MACOMB, Mich. (June 28, 2017) – When Chawanne Burns of Macomb launched Budget Blinds Serving Algonac and Richmond as a way to make extra income last year, she never thought of herself as an entrepreneur. But the local representative of the leading custom window-covering provider in North America celebrates its first anniversary this month.

Burns wanted something to balance her two young kids, and was introduced to Budget Blinds through a commercial touting a home-based franchisee. Despite her husband’s full-time job as union representative, she took the leap, received the franchisor-provided training and saw her business grow – so much so that Budget Blinds Serving Algonac and Richmond is now one of the fastest-growing Budget Blinds territories among the 1,300 in the company.

She says window covering installations in Algonac, Columbus, Dryden, Macomb, Marine City, New Haven, Shelby and Washington Township are up 70 percent so far this year.

“While I always wanted to own my own business, the idea of walking away from a traditional 9-to-5 job was scary at first,” she says. “But that’s what attracted me to a franchise model like Budget Blinds: they provide the training, leads and other resources you need to be the entrepreneur you always wanted to be.”

She is quick to point out the importance of time management. “Couples, especially, must clearly define their roles in the business, just as they do at home and in the family, and then be willing to change their routine as the business grows. What I tell other would-be entrepreneurs is that many of the rules for running a successful household apply to growing a successful business.’

Burns is convinced that home-based franchising is the wave of the future for aspiring individuals, couples and families who want to take control of their financial futures but don’t necessarily want to start their own business from scratch.

“Working for someone else creates limitations, but when you work for yourself, you can find ways to build wealth and take control of your life.”
