Metropolitan Concrete Corp. Honored as a Top Workplace for 2018

Metropolitan Concrete Corp., headquartered in Sterling Heights, Michigan, (www.MetropolitanConcrete.com) has joined an impressive group of companies including General Motors Corporation, Comcast, Aldi, Quicken Loans and Fifth Third Bank in being honored by the Detroit Free Press as a winner of the Michigan Top Workplaces Award. The 2018 award recipients, including Metropolitan Concrete, will be honored at an awards gala at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on November 8.

"It is gratifying for Metropolitan Concrete to be recognized as one of the Top Workplaces for 2018," said Patty Shea, the general manager of Metropolitan Concrete. "Our leadership team is continually striving to make Metropolitan Concrete a great place to work, not only so that we can retain the highly skilled and dedicated workers that we have, but also in order to attract the best new talent."

Metropolitan Concrete, which was founded in 1964 by Giovanni Bugli, is owned and operated by his sons, Leonard and Marco. Over the past 54 years, the company has built a reputation as one of the leading concrete contractors in southeastern Michigan for industrial, commercial and residential concrete installation. "We have experienced significant growth over the last 10 years and we're projecting continued growth each year," said Shea. "In order to manage the company's growth, we have focused on continuous improvement, not only in our procedures, but also in our employee benefits." In addition to health, dental, optical, life and short-term disability insurance, the company also offers a voluntary 401K retirement savings plan and matches employee contributions to the plan up to four percent. "Co-owners, Leonard and Marco, treat their employees like family," said Shea. "The wages we offer are better than competitive in order to retain and attract the best talent." Many of the 51 Metropolitan Concrete employees have been with the company at least 10 years. "We also offer paid vacations, paid holidays and paid sick days, which is rare in seasonal construction." While the company's primary business is concrete, they have expanded to include commercial snow removal and ice management services and have 24/7 bulk salt sales in the winter months. "This helps keep many of our employees working year-round," said Shea.

The Detroit Free Press partners with a national employee culture research firm, Energage, to determine the top workplace awardees each year. The award winning companies are selected based solely on the results of an employee feedback survey administered by Energage. Energage has surveyed and studied more than 50,000 organizations since 2006 and has identified 15 cultural drivers that are critical to the success of any organization. The company's research indicates that creating a top workplace is more about employees feeling valued and that their voices are heard, than it is about offering great benefits and vacation time. "At Metropolitan Concrete we believe that employee satisfaction and well-being hinge on several critical components," said Shea. "While compensation and benefits are important, so is having procedures and processes in place so that each employee knows what to do, has the training and equipment to accomplish their task, and is respected and valued as a professional. The high quality of our services is directly related to the high quality of the team we have assembled over the years."###
