Chesterfield Teen Drowns While Swimming at Lake

The 18-year-old's body was discovered about 30 feet from the shore in an area with a slide.

HARTLAND, MI — A Macomb County teen drowned late Monday afternoon in Handy Lake in Hartland Township.

The body of the unidentified 18-year-old Chesterfield Township resident was recovered about 30 feet from the shore after a more than hour-long search of the lake, located wet of Cundy Road and south of M-59 ner U.S. 23, The Livingston Daily reported.

His name has not been released pending the notification of relatives.

The teen’s body was discovered in an area with a slide, in about 15 to 20 feet of water. He wasn’t wearing a floatation device. No one is sure why he didn’t surface, rescue workers told the newspaper.

Hartland Fire Marshal Michael Bernardin said there was no indication of foul play, drugs or alcohol.

“It was just an unfortunate circumstance,” he said.
