Macbook Utility Leads Police to Suspect

Find My iPhone utility leads police to man who stole textbooks and laptop from vehicle

Chesterfield Township Police officers arrested Martel Lothery, 18, Nov. 9, after a search of his residence revealed property stolen from a Jeep in the early morning hours.

A resident told police when he exited his house on the 29000 block of Emily Lane at approximately 4:45 a.m., he observed two black males breaking into his daughter’s 2014 Jeep.

The suspects flad the scene on foot and the resident gave chase, following them until they disappeared into the Aspen Creek apartment complex.

The victim noted her backpack was missing from the vehicle, which contained four textbooks and an Apple Macbook Pro computer.

Using the “Find My iPhone,” utility on the computer, the victim was able to locate where the item was, and police were called.

Chesterfield police used this information to locate Lothery in an apartment at Aspen Creek.

Lothery’s mother answered the door and allowed police to search the apartment where the device and stolen textbooks were found.

The resident who initially gave chase identified Lothery as one of the suspects, and police arrested the man.

Lothery was charged with Breaking and Entering a Vehicle to Steal Property.

A felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Lothery is currently at the Macomb County Jail.
