On this day in 1886, according to History.com, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York City. The statue's inscription, from an Emma Lazarus poem, reads: "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
