Man Hospitalized After Driving Van into Royal Oak Restaurant

The driver was experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the crash; no others were injured.

An undisclosed medical emergency caused a man to drive his van into the side of an unoccupied Thai restaurant Thursday morning.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m., at Spicy Siam Thai Restaurant on Woodward Avenue, reported Fox affiliate WJBK.

“Next thing you know, I’m walking to the north and the van goes right into the building and stops dead,” Matt Cairns told WJBK.

Nobody but the driver, who was taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital according to CBS affiliate WWJ. His condition was unknown.

The restaurant has been deemed structurally unsafe by officials, and the business must remain closed. Jennifer Braybrandt a friend of the business owner, spoke with WWJ.

“[The owner is] very grateful that nobody was in the building at the time. She’s feeling very blessed about that right now but she’s very upset, of course, about the damage,” said Braybrandt. “She’s a very hard worker and she lives for this place, so she’s very upset.”
