Northville Rowing Gold Streak Continues at State Championships

The Northville High School Rowing Club continues to shine in back-to-back regatta Championship weekends

The Northville Rowing Club competed in the Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan 2019 Championship Regatta held on May 18 at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Northville continues to exceed expectations as 12 boats advanced to the finals late Saturday afternoon, capturing 4 gold and 3 silver event medals.

Standout Sara Bennett (senior) earned gold in the Women’s Varsity 1x with a time of 7:13 eclipsing her competition by 30 seconds to become State Champion. Equally impressive Pahul Kahlon (junior) also brought home gold for Northville in the Men’s Varsity 1x with a time of 6:12 amongst a talented field of rowers. For the first time in state competition both Men’s and Women’s Junior 8+ also captured gold for this growing team. Gabby Evangalista (junior coxswain), Isa Cirulis, Lily Oles, Tessa McCarthy, Nina Moyski (juniors), Makala Hande, Ava Kehoe (sophomores), Riley Finn and Kate Encelewski (freshmen) powered through with a winning time of 5:41. Never to be outdone, the Men’s Junior 8+ of Elyssa Daguanno (senior coxswain), Drew DiFrancesco, Jimmy King, Luke Lesh, Christian Ozog, Karthik Muruganand (juniors), Adam Bis, Thaddeus Felosak, and Russell Kobelsky (sophomores), captured gold with a time of 4:37. To round out the afternoon, Daguanno, Bis, Lesh, Kobelsky and Felosak’s time of 5:17 in the Men’s Junior 4+ seized silver. Our sculling power duo of King and DiFrancesco earned silver in the Men’s Varsity 2x with a time of 5:29, while an exciting photo finish for our junior power pair of Chloe Sargent and Allison Dunn (juniors) captured silver in the Women’s Varsity 2x with a time of 6:27.

Northville rowing has had a record breaking season and continues to improve, earning seven medals in twelve events in addition to our 4th, 5th and 6th place finishes. In overall team standings, Northville Rowing Club placed 3rd – our best finish in the team’s history. "All of our athletes have contributed to the success of the team and they have put the team's goals in front of individual accomplishments. This has been a big step for our program and we hope to continue moving forward at the SRAA National Championships Regatta this weekend. Our kids have a lot to be proud of." said Head Coach Nick Bickes about the team’s results.
