Northville Rowing Strikes Gold at Midwest Championships

The Northville High School Rowing Club showcases their team growth with impressive results

The Northville Rowing Club recently competed at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta held on May 11-12, at Dillon State Park in Nashport, Ohio. This annual regional event, which this year hosted 49 high school teams from eight states, qualifies the top rowers to compete at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship Regatta. Northville achieved its best finish yet for this growing program, with 13 boats powering through the qualifying races to compete in the finals. The traditionally strong sculling crews (two oars per rower) seized a pair of gold, three silver and two bronze amongst this impressive regional field of rowers.

Allison Dunn, Nina Moyski, Chloe Sargent (juniors) and Ava Kehoe (sophomore) in the Women’s Junior 4x, and Sara Bennett (senior), Tessa McCarthy, Isa Cirulis (juniors) and Makala Hande (sophomore) in the Women’s Varsity 4x both crossed the finish line at the front of the field to earn golds for the Mustangs, with winning times of 6:14 and 6:08 respectively. The Northville women continued to dominate capturing silver in Women’s Lightweight 2x with a time of 7:03 for Sargent and Dunn, while the Women’s Junior 2x duo of Cirulis and Hande brought home bronze with a time of 6:48. Not to be out done, a strong showing by Pahul Kahlon (junior) captured the silver in the Men’s Varsity 1x with a time of 6:33. The power team of Waldo Guzman (junior), Nate Bennett, Seth Sharples and Kyle Walter (sophomores) earned a silver in the Men’s Junior 4x with a time of 5:35. The Men’s Junior 2x team of Jimmy King and Drew DiFrancesco (juniors) crossed the finish line to capture a bronze with a time of 5:54.

With thirteen boats qualifying into the finals races, and many of those earning a number of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places, the Northville rowers demonstrated the depth of this growing team. In the overall team standings, Northville placed 7th – an impressive leap from the previous year considering the size and experience levels of much of the competition. Head Coach Nick Bickes stated, "This team's work ethic has really paid off. Each individual has put in their best efforts over the fall and winter and they are seeing the results of that work now. We have accomplished a lot this year and we want to continue to build for the future of the program."
