Plan Ahead to Avoid Gaining Holiday Weight, Wayne State Expert Says

Tonia Reinhard advises using small plates and utensils, among other tips.

Studies show that the average person can gain as much as four pounds during the holiday season, and Tonia Reinhard, director of Wayne State University’s dietetics program, has a few tips to help battle the bulge.

Planning ahead is one of the most effective ways to stave off extras pounds.

“Many people make the mistake of not eating before a party to make up for what they’ll eat later,” she said. A better tactic is to fill up on lean protein, fiber and fluids before a party, to help keep you fuller for longer.

Also, remember to use a plate – and not just to limit how much food you can carry. “Studies show that using smaller plates and utensils actually tricks the mind into thinking that we’ve eaten enough,” Reinhard said.

Lastly, alcoholic beverages – especially mixed drinks — can be loaded with calories, so remember to take it easy and don’t drink your daily calorie allowance.
Experts also say that if you do go overboard, don't beat yourself up — just get back on track, exercise and try to do a better job at the next party.
