Veterans and Military Family Enrichment

The Red Cross is teaming up with Oakland Community Health Network to host a "Veterans and Military Family Enrichment" event.

The Red Cross is teaming up with Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) to host a “Veterans and Military Family Enrichment” event. The activity-filled celebration of military service members and their families is being held at Catalpa Park in Southfield on October 6, 2018, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Oakland County military members, along with their families, are invited to learn about valuable community resources available to them. The Red Cross is conducting on-site workshops that focus on exploring stress and trauma, communication techniques, and awareness of mind and body.

“It is important for all military members, and their families, to stay healthy in mind, body, and spirit,” said OCHN Veterans and Military Family Navigator, Chaka McDonald. “Being able to provide resources in an inclusive atmosphere is something we’re looking forward to offering.”

HomeFront Strong, a resiliency program designed for post-9/11 military and veteran spouses/partners, will also be onsite to register families for group classes. The classes include strategies related to reducing stress, building positive coping skills, changing negative thinking, learning new approaches to self-care, and more.

Other community partners joining OCHN include the Southfield Police and Fire Departments, Veterans Affairs, and the National Guard. Free food and activities for children, including a bounce house and face painting, are being offered throughout the day.
