High Crash Rates Urge Novi Officials To Take Action
Novi has entered into agreements with the Michigan Department of Transportation for road construction.

Road projects will begin this fall after the Novi City Council approved an agreement to improve Haggerty Road, Beck Road and Grand River Avenue.
The improvements made to Haggerty Road and Grand River are funded by the Federal Surface Transportation Program, the Observer & Eccentric reports. The grants amount to more than $100,000, the Department of Public Services reports.
“The work is intended to migrate an abnormally high frequency of rear and crashes on southbound Haggerty as identified in the follow-up 2012 report on intersection crashes,” DPS Director Rob Hayes said.

According to a 2011 report, the intersection of Haggerty and Grand River is one of 11 intersections with the highest crash rates. Improvements will include a right-turn signal, upgraded street lighting and a sidewalk ramp work.
The improvements are being made specifically to decrease crashes at the intersection, Hayes said.

Grand River Avenue and Beck Road are also included in the road improvements. A grant from the congestion mitigation air quality improvement will fund 80 percent of the project’s cost.
Construction will begin tentatively in late August and will be completed this year, according to city officials.
