Novi High Students Claim 61 Awards at Journalism Event
Novi claimed first-place honors for its yearbook and student newspaper.

From NCSD: Novi High School took home plenty of awards from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s Spring Awards held at the Lansing Center on April 18. Novi students in the journalism/media arts programs earned 61 individual awards, including six first-place finishes.The MIPA rewards high school students for works in school newspapers, TV broadcast news and yearbook. Novi received awards in all three categories for Reflections (yearbook), The Wildcat Roar (newspaper), and Cat’s Eye News (in-house TV broadcast).
The MIPA spring awards recognize some work from the 2015-16 school year as newspaper copy from as far back as March 2016 could be submitted. Yearbook evaluations are also from the 2015-16 school year.Novi claimed first-place honors for yearbook (Caption Writing, Individual Advertisement, Sports Feature Photo) and newspaper (Illustration, Feature Columnist, and Diversity Coverage).
Novi graduate Maddie Eiler, now a freshman at Taylor University, received 13 awards, including first place for Individual Advertisement in Reflections, the school’s 284-page yearbook. She also picked up first-place honors, along with Autumn Nicholson, Lizzie Eiler and Nama Naseem, for Yearbook Caption Writing.Other first-place awards went to Lizzie Eiler (Sports Feature Photo-yearbook), Rebecca Kemski (Illustration, newspaper) and Alaina Agnello (Feature Columnist, newspaper, and Diversity Coverage, newspaper).In total, 17 Novi students received more than one award and eight earned more than two awards, including Agnello (four), Dan Netter (four), Britani Chin (four), Autumn Nicholson (four), Lizzie Eiler (three), Katherine Khosrovaneh, and Rachel Casaccia (three).

Founded in 1921 and housed in the Michigan State University School of Journalism, the MIPA is a nonprofit organization composed of scholastic journalism teachers and publications advisers and their students.This year there were 4,290 contest entries, which was an 11 percent drop from three years ago.
