Novi Parents React to Lack of Novi High School Principal

As the start of the 2013-2014 school year looms, the Novi Board of Education voted against hiring Nicole Carter as principal of Novi High School citing lack of experience, among other things.

Several parents of student at Novi High School have voiced their displeasure with the Novi Board of Education after interim principal Nicole Carter was not hired as the full-time principal at Novi High School.

"I am very disappointed with their decision and lack of support for both Ms. Carter and Dr. Matthews," Jeryl Mortvedt Thibaudeau wrote on the Novi Patch Facebook page.

Sue Farris Bank agreed, calling the situation a nightmare, "...Can't wait for the next Board election. This and the Board wanting teachers to take another pay cut this year proves we need new people who know what's best for the district."

Novi school board President Dennis O'Connor said there were two reasons Carter was not hired as Novi High School's principal, one–the hiring process and the other was her experience.

“Sometimes we have to set aside the love and respect we have for an individual to remember that function we’re doing," said Trustee George Kortlandt, who voted against hiring Carter, at Thursday's board meeting.

Carter, who is an assistant principal at Novi High School, has been serving as interim principal since Carol Diglio, former principal, moved to her new position in the district.

"Without a doubt, she was the perfect candidate for the position and the Board chose to vote against the recommendation of their Superintendent," parent Aaron Martinez wrote on the Novi Patch Facebook page. "The only right thing to do is rescind their vote during their next meeting and support Mrs. Carter as the next principal. After they do that, they can make all the changes to the hiring process that they want."
