Vaping Students: Novi Schools To Host Forum On E-Cigarettes

The use of e-cigarettes among students is growing. Administrators want to talk with parents about the unhealthy trend.

NOVI, MI – High school kids aren't picking up a cigarette and lighter so much any more. Now, according to one high school principal, they're vaping.

In an effort to familiar parents and community about the unhealthy trend, Novi High School is hosting a forum about vaping and electronic cigarettes in the school's Fuerst Auditorium.

Novi High School officials will host a special presentation about vaping and electronic cigarettes at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 in the school’s Fuerst Auditorium. The use of e-cigarettes has become the most popular form of smoking among teenagers. Novi High School Principal Nicole Carter is among concerned educators.

“Vaping is a trend that is increasing in popularity at Novi High School and high schools in the area and across the country,” Carter said. “We want to ensure that all students, parents and staff are educated on this topic. We genuinely care about our students and want them to make healthy choices.”

At Novi High School, the use of and or possession of e-cigarettes vapes is a violation of the school district's code of conduct and is subject to a disciplinary consequence of suspension from school.

The Substance Abuse Education and Support team from St. Joseph Mercy Health System will moderate the presentation "Vaping 101: What’s Important to Know." The session is intended to be an informative and educational program for adults with their adolescents to learn the facts about vaping.

Attendees will learn three things: what a vape is and how it is used; what are the effects of its use; and what are the legal issues surrounding vaping.

“Our administration wants parents to be aware of this trend so that you can have a conversation with their children about the danger of vaping,” Carter said.

The Vaping 101 presentation is open to all in the community. Registration is not required.
