Mellissa Carone, Trump Witness And SNL Joke, To Run For State Rep

Mellissa Carone has submitted a filing to run for the 46th District seat in Oakland County.

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP, MI — A key witness for the campaign of former President Donald Trump who gained national attention after making false claims of election fraud in Michigan has formed a campaign committee with the intention of running for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives in 2022.

Mellissa Carone filed to run for 46th District representative as a Republican, according to a Michigan secretary of state document filed Wednesday.

The seat is currently held by Rep. John Reilly (R-Oakland Township), but Reilly cannot run for re-election in 2022 because of term limits.

Carone was a contract employee for Dominion Voting Systems in Detroit who testified on behalf of the Trump campaign before a Michigan House oversight committee hearing in December, making claims of voter fraud that were disproved or discredited. Her claims prompted Dominion to send her a strongly worded letter accusing her of spreading lies and to file a cease-and-desist order against her.

Carone's testimony included multiple exchanges with legislators in which she repeatedly said, "I know what I saw." At one point, speaking to Rep. Steven Johnson (R-Wayland), she asked when referring to voter rolls, "What'd you guys do, take it and do something crazy to it?"

"I know what I saw. I know what I saw! And I signed something that said that if I'm wrong I can go to prison. Did you?" she reportedly said.

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani could be heard shushing Carone at the hearing when she said she'd seen poll workers run the same ballots through voting machines "thousands of times."

Her exchanges with legislators led "Saturday Night Live" to make her the subject of a sketch.
