Money Wasn't Real in Craigslist Sale, But Gun Was: Police

Craigslist transaction turned scary for Orion Township resident who pointed out $800 cash was bogus, police said.

ORION TOWNSHIP – A transaction that started on Craigslist turned scary for an 18-year-old Orion Township resident who tried to sell a Macbook computer for $800 — which turned out to be phony — Tuesday night, authorities said.

Deputies were called Oakland County Sheriff’s were called to the residence in the 800 block of N. Long Lake Blvd.about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after the victim said one of two men who had arrived to buy the computer pointed a gun at him when he called them out on the counterfeit money, according to a news release.

The suspects grabbed the computer and fled in a vehicle, and the victim followed them for a short time before losing sight of them and calling police.

After the sheriff’s office put out an all-point bulletin, an Auburn Hills police officer spotted the vehicle southbound on Interstate 75 and was able to stop them near Wattles Road in Troy.

Both suspects — ages 21 and 22, both of Detroit — were taken into custody and the computer was recovered from their vehicle. They were taken to the Oakland County Jail, and charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
