(Originally published Oct. 17, 2016) The Oakland County Sheriff's Office offered three self-defense classes for women this month, and each class reached capacity. The number of women taking part in the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office free self-defense classes has increased annually since its start in 2009.
Approximately 60 women showed up to the most recent class, held Oct. 15 at the Sheriff’s Auburn Hills Complex. The final class this month, set for Oct. 29, is already full with a 100-person waiting list; more classes are expected to be scheduled, according to the Daily Tribune.
The class is led by Sgt. Jen Miles, a certified Rape Aggression Defense instructor, offers a one-hour question-and-answer session covering various aspects of personal safety followed by a three-hour block of physical training techniques.
