Paint Creek Market's 'Grandma' Jenny Acree Dies at 85

Jenny Acree is remembered as a family woman, excellent cook, bingo enthusiast and "Grandma" of the Paint Creek Market.

Jenny Acree, affectionately known as 'Grandma' to many patrons of the in Goodison, died Sunday surrounded by her children following a battle with cancer.

Acree, who , could often be found behind the counter of Paint Creek Market – the family business where . Granddaughter Kim Sampson said Acree especially enjoyed .

Born in Detroit on July 8, 1926, Acree grew up near Rochester and Big Beaver roads in Troy. She married on Sept. 3, 1943; George passed away on Nov. 18, 1976.

Sampson describes her grandma as a family woman who loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, adding that "(her) face would light up when she saw the little ones, and she delighted in being around them."

Acree also loved playing bingo with her friends and getting her hair done, Sampson said. She was also a talented cook who had a holiday tradition of making her special "black-bottom" miniature cupcakes; she recently baked 1,000 of them for friends and family before becoming ill.

She is survived by her children, George T (Penny) Acree, William (Karen) Acree, Ellen (Mike) Oliver, Gaile (Brady) Vibert; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements for Acree are pending.
