Vikram Goddla From Detroit Country Day School Declared Winner Of Regional Spelling Bee Competition

A total of 82 fifth- through eighth-graders from all over Oakland County competed in the Bee.

Vikram Goddla, an eighth-grader from Detroit Country Day School, was declared winner of the Oakland Schools Scripps Regional Spelling Bee after he correctly spelled the word gelatigenous. Goddla was the runner up in last year’s competition.

A total of 82 fifth- through eighth-graders from all over Oakland County competed in the Bee, which was held Feb. 29 at Oakland Schools Main Campus. As the winner, Goddla receives many prizes, including a trophy and an automatic invite to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

There was a four-way tie for this year’s runner-up spot:

· Tyler Brederintz from St. Matthew Lutheran Schools, grade 8

· Mooyoung Lee, Bloomfield Hills Middle School, grade 8

· Jayden Sangma, Auburn Hills Christian School, grade 5

· Charity Werenka, Clawson Middle School, grade 6

If Goddla is unable to compete, the four runner-ups will take the Scripps National Spelling Bee written test to determine who will attend.

This year's event was sponsored by Oakland Schools and the Oakland Schools Education Foundation.
