Rochester Hills should have opted for competitive bids for its trash-hauling contract, rather than extending its contract with Republic Services, Inc., according to a Detroit News editorial.
The company lowered its cost from about $17 per month per household to about $15, but the Free Press editorial indicated neighboring communities, such as Shelby Township, receive a similar service for $13 per month.
"Competitive bids are the most cost-effective approach," the editorial argued. "Competitive bids would have confirmed whether Rochester Hills got the best deal."
