Paralympic Games: Michigan Skier Misses Medal, Focuses On Slalom

Jamie Stanton was 10th after the first run of the Super Combined alpine, but skied an amazing second to leap frog the competition.

PYEONGCHANG, S. KOREA – Rochester Hills native and alpine skier Jamie Stanton's strength is the more technical runs down the slopes. He showed that on Tuesday in the Super Combined alpine event at the 2018 Paralympic Games.

After his first run, the Super Giant Slalom portion, he was in 10th place. But, in the Slalom portion of the race, he turned in a remarkable time to leap into fourth place overall.

Stanton, a graduate of Rochester Adams High School and a two-time Paralympian, finished fourth overall. Aleksei Bugaev, a Neutral Paralympic Athlete, won the gold medal, and Arthur Bauchet of France, and Adam Hall of New Zealand, won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Stanton has two more alpine events left, including his strongest event, the Slalom, scheduled to run on Saturday.

Stanton was born with fibular hemimelia, a growth deficiency of the fibula. At 6 months old, his right leg was amputated below the knee. By the age of 1, he was fitted with a prosthetic leg.
