As we approach the inauguration of a new President and look at the challenges we are facing as a nation it is indeed necessary that we come together, and nothing will foster that more than all of us re-learning the art of respectful discourse. As a Muslim American I can testify that this is something emphasized repeatedly in the Holy Quran. The Holy Quran says
“And say to My servants that they should speak that which is best. Surely, Satan stirs up discord among them. Surely, Satan is an open enemy to man.” [17:54]
The Quran calls for civil and respectful, “that which is best”, discourse. And likens those who go against this injunction as falling prey to Satan and helping stir up discord amongst the people.

The Worldwide spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Caliph to Messiah Ahmad, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad said in his keynote address at the inauguration of the ‘Baitul Aafiyat’ Mosque in Philadelphia, USA in 2018,
“Irrespective of differences of race, religion or social background, we are united as human beings and so it is vital that we interact with other people, rather than isolating ourselves or only mingling with members of our own particular community… For the advancement and evolution of society, and to foster an atmosphere of peace and togetherness, respectful discourse and discussion between people and amongst different communities is vital.”

About Ahmadiyya Muslim Community:
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, reformist and fast-growing international movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Community spans over 200 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is among the oldest American-Muslim organizations.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long- awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad.
The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and re-institute morality, justice, and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.
