Rochester Hills Permanently Preserves Green Space on City’s South Side

From the City of Rochester Hills: Last week, City Council approved the acquisition of a parcel that will add to the city’s collection of green space parcels and keep the property permanently preserved.

This purchase provides another opportunity for residents to enjoy the beautiful open spaces that exists in our community. This ten-acre parcel features a high quality tree canopy, wildlife, and wetland area. The property, located at 1380 Ruby Avenue, is also within walking distance to Avondale Middle School.

“Residents had the vision over 10 years ago to set aside land that would become protected as city green space for the next generation,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “I’m thrilled to announce we are starting off the new year with such an exciting purchase for the residents of Rochester Hills.”

In September 2005, Rochester Hills residents passed a 10-year millage to acquire and preserve natural green space in their community. Shortly after, City Council established a nine-member Green Space Advisory Board (GSAB) responsible for making recommendations regarding the expenditure of millage funds to permanently preserve natural green spaces, wildlife habitats and scenic views.

When selecting green space for purchase, the city uses a criteria list created by the GSAB to ensure a fair, rational and objective basis. This tool gives properties points for features such as wetlands, woodlands, and frontage on the bodies of water. After reviewing all potential properties, the Ruby property received the highest score.

The city also has six other greenspace properties that each provides unique natural features that will forever be protected. Each of the spaces are available for residents to enjoy the great outdoors.

"I am very excited that we continue to expand and protect our open spaces. I feel these areas are paramount to creating a solid foundation for our city,” states City Councilwoman Susan Bowyer. “I have been very passionate and out spoken about protecting the Parks and open spaces in Rochester Hills."
