Rochester Police Chief: Beware of the Grandma Scam
Rochester Police Chief Steve Schettenhelm said residents have been subject to phony calls in recent days: here's what you need to know.

The Rochester Police Department has received calls in recent days from residents contacted by scammers who pretend the residents' relatives are in trouble or in jail.
According to Police Chief Steve Schettenhelm, it's a classic "Grandma Scam," where someone claims a loved one needs money to hire an attorney, post bond or pay for medical treatment.
"The person calling with have just enough information to lure the person into sending out the money," Schettenhelm told Rochester Patch. "They will request that funds be sent by Western Union. If someone receives this type of call it is best to try and verify the information before taking any action."
