Southeastern Michigan One of the Driest Areas in the Midwest

Rain is expected to be below normal for the rest of the summer.

Is your lawn brown? You’re not alone.

The Detroit News reported that southeastern Michigan is one of the driest areas of the Midwest right now. Some residents have opted to let their lawns fade in lieu of racking up huge water bills trying to keep them green.

Jeffrey Andresen, a state climatologist and co-director of Enviro-weather at Michigan State University, said precipitation in some parts of the state is 25 percent of normal or less.

Andersen called Michigan’s period of dryness “a collective set of bad luck.” He said U-shaped wind patterns and the jet stream are two main factors causing the lack of precipitation.

Dave Samuhel, a senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, said rain is expected to be below normal by two inches for the remainder of the summer.
