Owner Marilyn Trent recently submitted information about the business through the Small Business Spotlight.

Here are her answers.

What does your business offer? 

Trent is a full-service brand development, design, digital and print media agency. Thanks to our broad range of in-house skills we also excel at cross-channel marketing strategies. We balance our creative and strategic talent with technical expertise to create unique, cost-effective solutions for our many clients.

What's your most popular product or service? 

Our award winning manufacturing websites are well known across the region, but we also have an excellent reputation for our nonprofit marketing expertise. We recently expanded our capabilities to include brand strategy and are getting a great response from clients who are looking to discovery and want to develop their organization’s brand.

What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?

The inspiration to start my own company came from Ettore Sottass. a famous Italian designer who founded Memphis Group in 1981, a furniture design company that changed the world of industrial design forever. He said that he wanted to give young designers a chance that he had never had when he began his career. He was 60 at the time. I wanted to do the same thing so I hired designers fresh out of college and gave them chances that many agencies would not risk or were simply too big.

September, 1991

How did your business come to be? 

As a single mother, at the time, who was passionate about design and the arts, I knew I had to find a way to leverage my art degree into a profit-making venture. I began by freelancing out of my home for various Rochester businesses and Trent Design took off from there. Today we are a full–service design and marketing firm with 8 employees and offices in Rochester and Detroit.

Why did you choose the area you did?

I love design and the arts. I always have. I graduated with a B.F.A. in ceramic arts and photography from Eastern Michigan University and knew any career plans would always have to involve creative thinking and/or the arts in some way or another.
