When Should You Call 9-1-1? Follow Rochester Police's Tips

Say you're driving and another driver pulls out in front of you. Your cars collide, you'll need to file a report, but there are no injuries. Do you call 9-1-1?

According to Rochester Police, 9-1-1 should only be called in the case of an emergency. In cases where there's an auto accident not resulting in injuries, the department's non-emergency number should be called, or a report can be filed at the station.

According to Rochester Police, examples of situations when 9-1-1 should not be called include:

  • An auto accident where there are no injuries
  • An alleged crime where the offender cannot be located
  • A request for general information
  • Medical situations that do not require an ambulance
  • However, if you are not sure which number to call, call 9-1-1. It is better to be safe than sorry.
So who would one call when police assistance is requested on a non-emergency basis?
Write down your local department's non-emergency number and call that when the need arises.

For Rochester Police, the department can be reached at its non-emergency line, (248) 651-9621, or stop in to the station, 400 Sixth Street in Rochester.

For the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, call (248) 858-4911 for non-emergencies.
