Your Guide to January in Rochester

Here are five community events you won't want to miss this month.

Community Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  • When/where: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13; St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
  • What's happening: ‘A Dream in Action’ is the theme for this year’s annual celebration of Dr.  Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s life and message of non-violence and equality. School and church groups, as well as community organizations, participate in the celebration. It is free and open to the public. 

30 Years of Paint Creek Center for the Arts

  • When/where: Opening reception 7-9 p.m. Jan. 18; Paint Creek Center for the Arts
  • What's happening: This January, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, Paint Creek Center for the Arts is pleased to present 1982-2012 Art Endures – Thirty Years and Counting. With over 70 artists, this exhibition features stimulating and groundbreaking work in all media from across Michigan and beyond. This exhibition will run Jan. 18 – Feb. 15. Meet the artists at the free opening reception.

Rochester Fire & Ice Festival

  • When/where: Jan. 25-27. Hours will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Festivities are located in downtown Rochester.
  • What's happening: Ice sculptures, a tubing hill, ice skating and more winter activities.

Friends of the Library Winter Used Book Sale

  • When/where: Jan. 23-27 at the Rochester Hills Public Library
  • What's happening: It's a winter tradition — thousands of books, DVDs and CDs will be for sale (most for $1) at the library. Proceeds support library programs and events.

Freeze Your Franny 5K Walk/Run

  • When/where: 11 a.m. Jan. 26 at Stony Creek Metropark's Eastwood Beach.
  • What's happening: The timed-course will be cleared and salted — and it's dog-friendly. A warming tent and patio heaters are available - so are hot chocolate, soup and coffee.
