Required Summer Reading for Incoming 12th Graders

Attention incoming 11th-graders at : It’s time to start your summer reading.

The 12th Grade Michigan Merit Curriculum, ELA 12, theme for this year is Leadership Qualities. As preparation for this course, incoming 12th-graders are required to read about a leader of their choice and write a well-organized essay. This essay should be a minimum of five paragraphs and should include the following information:

  • Give a short biographical sketch of the person you have selected to read about.
  • How effective is/was this leader?
  • What leadership qualities does this individual have that you most admire?
  • Describe two individuals that you know that have admirable leadership qualities. 
  • What leadership qualities do you have?
  • What leadership qualities would you like to have?
  • How can you develop these leadership qualities in your final year of high school?
  • How will these qualities help you in your adult life?
