Hundreds Of Royal Oak Children Hungry
The Royal Oak Rotary Club's Blessings in a Backpack food program helps provide weekend meals to kids in need.

ROYAL OAK, MI — In a community known for plentiful dining options that are generally overflowing with patrons, it’s almost hard to believe hunger could exist. But it does and hundreds of Royal Oak children are thankful for the Rotary Club’s Blessings in a Backpack food program.
According to a Royal Oak Tribune report, the national program provides more than 90,000 students weekend meals each week. That includes more than 200 in Royal Oak.
“There are about 900 students in Royal Oak schools who qualify for the weekend meals. Last year, 231 students signed up for the weekend food supplies. Sometimes, fear of being mocked by their peers keeps children from having their parents sign up for the supplemental food.”
“I think there can be a stigma for people asking for help,” Shelley Lake, president of the Royal Oak Rotary Club,. “They don’t want to be embarrassed and come forward and ask for help.”
