Royal Oak To Create Senior Housing, Services Task Force

Royal Oak wants to help seniors age in place and stay in the Royal Oak community.

Royal Oak City Commission will address senior housing issues with a new task force. According to the Oakland Press, by 2030, a quarter of the city’s population will be over 65. City Commissioner Kyle DuBuc told the Tribune that Royal Oak needs a strategy in place and that Monday’s commission meeting represents the first steps in keeping the city attractive to older residents.

“We know we need a strategy for folks that want to spend their golden years here,” he said. “We need to ensure we have senior friendly housing and ... amenities seniors need at price points they can afford when they are looking to move out of their (traditional) family homes,” DuBuc told the Press. Amenities seniors prefer include first floor master bed- and bathrooms, no steps and doors and halls wide enough for wheelchairs. One thing the task force will look at are ways of “incentivizing” these features in the city’s building code.
