Royal Oak High School Teacher Wins Educator of the Year Award
Royal Oak's Mike Conrad was recognized by Digital Arts Film & Television.
ROYAL OAK, MI — Mike Conrad, a media teacher at Royal Oak High School, was awarded the 2021 Michigan Film Educator of the year Award by Digital Arts Film & Television, the district announced Monday.
Conrad, who has taught at the high school for 11 years, was recognized via a surprise Zoom organized by DAFT President Kevin Walsh.
“We are so proud of you,” Royal Oak Schools Superintendent Mary Beth Fitzpatrick said, according to a news release. “You’re a blessing to our students and our program. You are among the best to influence our children.”

Royal Oak High School Principal Mike Giromini said in a news release the award was well-deserved and that Conrad had done a phenomenal job.
“You set high standards for your kids, and it makes all the difference," he said.

Conrad was nominated by L’Anse Creuse Schools LCPS-TV Program Director Michael Kaufman. Kaufman said that he chose Mike Conrad because of the passion Conrad has for what he does, according to the release.
“You connect with students consistently,” Kaufman said in a statement. “Your students adore you to pieces and you set a bar of excellence, that’s why I nominated you.”
Royal Oak Schools Board of Education Vice-President Mary Anne Vanhaitsma also was on the Zoom call and said she loved how Conrad created a love of film in the classroom.
“Your students admire you,” she said, “and they are lucky to have you.”
Conrad said he was overwhelmed by the surprise Zoom but that he appreciated the award, in the release.
“It means a lot,” he said.
