ROYAL OAK, MI — Royal Oak Middle School raised a PRIDE flag on Monday to recognize PRIDE month.

It is the first time the flag has been put on display in school history, Sarah Bockhausen, a reacher at the middle school and co-sponsor of the student-run group Sexuality Acceptance and Gender Alliance (SAGA).

"ROMS is showing its Pride," she said. Happy Pride Month! Thanks, SAGA Club for your amazing leadership!"

Michigan marked June as Pride Month to recognize the accomplishments of the state's LGBTQ+ community. That announcement was made Tuesday.

June 2021 will celebrate Pride Month to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, an event recognized as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Movement, state officials said previously.
