MLK Service Day: Our community is honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service on Jan. 16, 2017, at Royal Oak High School, 1500 Lexington Blvd. The event kicks off with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast followed by a keynote address from the Rev. Dr. Faith Fowler, the Executive Director of Detroit-based Cass Community Social Services, and a graduate of Royal Oak Schools. As a part of the event planning, a variety of service opportunities in Royal Oak and the Detroit area have been organized. Whether you simply drop off donations, stay for breakfast, or just come to hear the keynote address, we welcome your participation!

We are encouraging students, families, and community members to make this a day on rather than a day off by participating in service projects. There are limits on the number of persons that can participate in some of the activities that the planning team has organized. For more information, click here. Even if you are not able to participate in one of the service projects planned for January 16th, the hope is that this day might inspire you to find ways to serve others. Go to the event website to learn more! And, please share this information with family members and friends! (Note: We have a particular need for adult volunteers willing to commit to the service project planned for the Redford Brightmoor initiative.

Another news item from the superintendent's statement: On Jan. 16, the Royal Oak Emagine Theatres is offering $5 movie tickets to "Hidden Figures," the story of three African-American woman who worked at NASA and helped launch astronaut John Glenn into space. To get the special deal (which is offered for showings before 6:00 p.m.), bring your student I.D. or other proof that you're enrolled in Royal Oak Public Schools.
