The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul mandate to obtain health insurance.

Chief Justice John Roberts was the swing decision in the 5-4 vote on the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010.

The president’s healthcare policy, recognized as his signature legislative achievement, would provide an additional 30 million Americans with healthcare insurance.

, Royal Oak's largest employer and a large regional heath care provider, welcomed Thursday's ruling while cautioning there still some unknowns.

"It's a complicated ruling," said Mike Killian, vice president of marketing and public affairs at Beaumont. The Beaumont Health System is concerned about "how it's all funded, how the machinery gets put together."

The plusses? "This will focus our system – and everybody else – on primary care," Killian said. "It will require us to keep whole populations healthy rather than just focusing on individuals."

"Regardless of the ruling, the direction we have to go is improving quality while lowering costs," he added, as Baby Boomers age and place more demands on the system.
