'Tis The Season For Proposals At The Detroit Zoo's Wild Lights
14 couples have gotten engaged at this year's Wild Lights. One person popped the question as lights formed the magical words "Marry Me."

ROYAL OAK, MI — 'Tis the season for marriage proposals! At least 14 couples have gotten engaged against a backdrop of 5 million sparkling LED lights at this year's dazzling Wild Lights spectacular event at the Detroit Zoo, according to a press release.

Here are just a few magical 2016 Wild Lights proposals: One person popped the question as red lights swirled to form the words “Marry Me” in a private area of the Cotton Family Wetlands Boardwalk. Another proposal took place as rose petals were sprinkled on the couple from above. And a violinist played romantic background music as another pair of lovebirds got engaged.
Patricia Janeaway, the Communications Director for the Detroit Zoo, shared with Patch one very special Zoo proposal she actually helped orchestrate for one of her former interns. Janeaway says the intern's boyfriend contacted her about a surprise proposal. Janeaway got to work creating a plan and alerted a local television station of the impending proposal and arranged for a reporter and photographer to do a story about the Zoo's internship program. Janeaway told Patch, "After the reporter interviewed me about the program, she asked if anyone ever proposed marriage in the Polar Passage. I told her that the Zoo is a very popular place to pop the question but I was unaware of a specific proposal in the Polar Passage – but there’s always a first time. On cue, the groom-to-be came out of hiding and proposed to his girl." The crew captured the proposal with cameras rolling and aired the story on their morning newscast.
