UPDATE: Water Back on at Coventry Park Homes

Residents were without water for few hours Sunday afternoon while city workers repaired a broken main at a Royal Oak condominium complex.

The water is back on for the residents of  near Crooks and 14 Mile in Royal Oak after a broken main required city workers to shut off service for several hours Sunday afternoon.

The broken 8-inch main was discovered at the condominium complex late Sunday morning, and five members of the Royal Oak Department of Public Service began repairs around noon. Repairs were finished around 4:30 p.m., DPS Water Department Supervisor Jeff Pierce said.

The break was between buildings in the Coventry complex, closest to 1851 Wickham, Pierce said.

Residents of eight buildings with six units each were affected, Pierce said. “Anyone who answered the door has been notified the water is or will be shut off shortly while we make repairs,” Pierce said about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Angelo Engwis, who lives in the building at 1854 Torquay, didn't seem too worried about the situation Sunday afternoon, joking that, "I have to go to the bathroom, and I can't."

Fellow resident Susanne Jacobson also said having the water shut off wasn't a big deal to her, but she was just curious about what was going on. "We are just wondering how long it will be out and what they are doing," she said.

Emergency utility locators arrived late Sunday morning to mark underground utility lines in the area before repairs could begin, according to Andrea Beaudoin of Utility Resources Group out of Sterling Heights.

“There are a lot of buried phone and electrical lines there” that created an additional challenge for the city crew, Pierce said.
