Hornets Winless on Day 2 at District

Saline finished with the fourth seed and has a tough rough ahead.

The Saline girls’ water polo team fell dropped two games in the Michigan Water Polo Association East Region District Championships at Saline High School Saturday.

After defeating Grand Ledge 11-4 in Friday’s district opener, the Hornets battled Okemos, ranked second in the state, Saturday morning in the semifinal. Saline fell 13-2.

Abbey Wrobleski and Abby Kowalczyk scored for Saline.

Saline went on to face Pioneer in the consolation game. The Pioneers won 6-2. Alex Wagner and Caitlin Sisken scored for the Hornets.

Okemos went on to defeat Dexter in the championship game, 12-1.

By virtue of its top four finish, the Hornets lived to play again. Saline advances to the MWPA East Region Championships at Birmingham Groves. Saline plays at 4 p.m. Friday against Ann Arbor Huron, who won the District 4-6 district at Birmingham Seaholm this weekend. The Hornets need an upset to stay alive and advance to the state championship tournament at East Lansing June 1-2. Huron is ranked fourth in the state.
