Police Report: Drunk Driver Arrested After Allegedly Fleeing Crash Scene

A 46-year-old Harrison Township man was arrested July 13 after fleeing the scene of a crash, according to a police report.

According to witnesses interviewed by police, the driver was involved in a three-car crash in front of Faurecia on Michigan Avenue. All three drivers pulled their vehicles into the Faurecia parking lot, but the Harrison Township man pulled around the other two vehicles and exited west on to Michigan Avenue.

Police were westbound on Michigan Avenue when flagged down by two subjects involved in the crash. One of the men reported that a gray Pontiac Grand Prix involved in the crash fled west on Michigan Avenue, according to the report. A witness report placed the vehicle at the Speedway gas station. Police arrived as the vehicle was exiting the parking lot. Police turned on the emergency lights and yelled for the driver to stop, but the driver continued. Officer Dennis Gruschow ran up to the vehicle and reached through the window to stop the vehicle by turning the ignition off, according to the report. The driver refused a preliminary breathalyzer test and was arrested on suspicion of operating while impaired, according to the report.

Pending the results of a blood test, police are seeking charges for driving operating while impaired. Police are also seeking charges for hit and run and driving with a suspended license.

A 19-year-old Saline man may face charges for open intoxicants in a vehicle and driving after underage drinking, according to a Saline Police Department report.

On July 14 police received a tip about an erratic driver. After spotting the vehicle at Speedway, police followed and then stopped the vehicle near Maple Road and Michigan Avenue for turning without signaling and for having a broken tail light, according to the report.

A preliminary breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of .033. The legal limit is .08. Since the man is younger than the legal age of 21, he was arrested on the state’s “zero tolerance” law regarding underage drinking and driving, according to the report.

Police also found a half-empty bottle of rum in the vehicle, according to the report.

Xanax Taken from Purse

A 47-year-old Canton Township woman reported to police that someone took a bottle of Zanax from her purse while she was at work at the Faurecia plant at 7700 E. Michigan Ave. July 9.

Police have no suspects.

Man Arrested on Child Support Warrants 

A 46-year-old Saline Township man stopped July 12 for expired plates was arrested on two warrants out of Calhoun County for failure to pay child support. He was lodged in jail awaiting transport to Calhoun County law enforcement.
