SCS Police Action Shooting Under Investigation

The St. Clair Shores Police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting in which an officer fired at a man who was trying to point a shotgun at officers responding to a 911 call.

police are investigating a police action shooting of a 40-year-old man who was brandishing a shotgun Tuesday night on the balcony of an apartment near Little Mack and 10 Mile roads.

The man, who lives in the apartment, fired one shot as officers arrived to the scene Tuesday night, St. Clair Shores Deputy Chief Glenn Bowlin said Wednesday morning. As officers exited their vehicles, the man came out onto his balcony brandishing a shotgun, he said.

Officers gave the man several commands to drop his weapon, but he failed to comply and then began "leveling" the gun to point at officers, Bowlin said. One of the officers fired a shot at the man striking him in the chest/shoulder area, Bowlin said.

The man is in critical condition and under police guard at St. John's Hospital. Bowlin said his condition is unlikley to change anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the officer, whose name is not yet being released, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Bowlin said, explaining that is standard procedure for such a case.

No one else was injured during the shooting, Bowlin said, and no other rounds were fired either by the shotgun weilding man or officers.

The investigation process for a police action shooting is lengthy, Bowlin said, explaining it will involve both the criminal investigations unit as well as the prosecutor's office.

Bowlin said the prosecutor's office is being consulted related to possible charges against the man who was shot.
