St. Clair Shores Sharks Take Silver Medal at State Finals

Special Olympics team makes it to state championship game

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — The St. Clair Shores Sharks Special Olympics basketball team went to the state finals for the third consecutive year, and brought home a medal for the third straight year. The team made it to the state championship game in Division 6 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids on March 25 and earned a silver medal.

In the opening round, the Sharks defeated the Muddogs by a score of 36-22. In the championship game, the team battled the Warriors in a game that went back and forth for more than three quarters before the Warriors pulled ahead in the final two minutes and won by a score of 30-25.

It was the first time that the Sharks played in the state championship game. In their 10 years of competition, the Sharks have now gone to the state finals four times and won three medals.

Sharks players include: James Averette, Romel Bond, Scott Castro, Aaron Deskins, Joe Gasiorowski, Dwain Goodlow, Vincente Johnson, Andy Linsdeau, Anthony Maniaci, Stephen Mazurkiewicz, Matthew Osterman, Suzanne Pauli, Sean Phelps, and Josh White. The team was coached by Greg Mazurkiewicz with assistant coaches Margaret Mazurkiewicz and Steve White.
