St. Clair Shores Student Wins Green Award

Avary Black's logo design will go on all of Macomb County's Green Schools Celebration materials next school year.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — Jefferson Middle School student Avary Black recently won the award for best new logo for Macomb County’s Green Schools Celebration. The St. Clair Shores student's logo will be used on all Macomb Green Schools-related items next year. The ninth annual event is sponsored by the county’s board of commissioners.

In all, 125 schools were honored on Monday by commissioners. Programs from all around the county were acknowledged for their innovative practices in encouraging students to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Four schools were awarded for top performance in each category.

The categories are determined by a point system which tallies various pieces of each schools’ conservation policies and programs:

  • Top Green School: North Lake High School
  • Top Emerald School: Kaiser Elementary
  • Top Evergreen School: Iroquois Middle School
  • Top Overall School: Eisenhower High School

A new “Green Advocate” award was created this year to honor an individual who has exemplified what it means to go above and beyond, dedicates themselves to green practices, and inspires others by example. The inaugural Green Advocate award went to Kevin Bai of Chippewa Valley High School. He will be honored for his extensive list of accomplishments at the April 27th Full Board Meeting by the Commissioners.

Next year will be the 10th annual Green Schools celebration and the Board of Commissioners is planning to make it extra special. Stay tuned to the Board’s social media and the Green Schools Website for more information about next year’s celebration.
