A combination of prolific American writer Neil Simon and Russian Playwright Anton Chekhov, The Good Doctor is, by turns, a charming, hilarious and touching play exploring the eccentricities and frailties of being human.
It consists of a series of short plays, based on short stories by Anton Chekhov. These plays are framed by an unnamed writer-meant to represent Chekhov himself-suffering from writer's block and his own artistic temperament. Throughout the play, the writer speaks to the audience as his confidante, sharing these stories throughout one day. These stories are from his childhood, others from his family and friends, and still others are his own life experiences. The audience meets a variety of characters, all of whom are immediately relatable, strikingly human and, at times, absurdly ridiculous.
